Hip prosthesis is a crucial surgery procedure to replace a natural hip with an artificial hip joint.  Many people get their hips disjointed or severely injured for a variety of reasons. Once there is a serious dislocation or injury to the hip, in most of the cases, it has to be replaced for better hip movement and to get relief from pain. Hip prosthesis India manufacturers are known for making high quality artificial hip joints.

The procedure

Hip replacement surgery is a complex procedure. But the experienced surgeons go through the procedure in a cool and calculated way. Hip replacement surgery is all about surgically removing a painful hip joint that has arthritis. Then the joint is replaced with an artificial joint. However, the decision to replace the hip is usually the last option when all other treatment has failed to give adequate relief to the patent.

Types of hip replacement

There are mainly two types of hip replacement – an anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement. In the anterior hip replacement surgery, the surgeon works on the front of the hip joint. This means that there is only a minimal invasive surgery required for total hip joint replacement.

The posterior hip replacement approach is also known as muscle sparing surgery. This is because there is no need to cut the muscles when the surgeon wants to access the hip joint. One of the advantages of this approach is that the recovery period for the patient is very short. The patient can resume normal activity soon.

 Recovery

After the surgery, the recovery time will depend on the complications involved in the surgery. Severely injured hip joints will take more time to heal than normal injuries. But once the patient is no more dependent on walking aids, the recovery fastens. First, the patient will be walking around the house without any pain. Then gradually a longer distance equaling to two house blocks without pain becomes possible to cover without resting and pain. These are the signs of short-term recovery.  The time for complete recovery may range from one to six months.

Different materials

We use different materials and designs to manufacture hip joints. These joints have two basic components – the ball and the socket. The ball component is made of a polished strong metal. It can be made of ceramic material. The socket component is usually manufactured from durable plastic/polyethylene, metal, or ceramic.

The manufacturers in India use Metal on Metal [MOM]. They prefer making both the socket and the ball from stainless steel, titanium, cobalt, chromium or a combination of these metals. Mostly, titanium is the preferred material which consists of cobalt and chromium alloys. Stainless steel is very rarely used. It is to be noted that all orthopedic implants release their constituent ions into the blood. But these constituents are come out of the body in the urine. In some patients, the ions can get accumulated in the patient’s body.

A key reason for hip prosthesis its durability.  A hip joint made of titanium lasts for 20 years. Most importantly, the hip allows the patient virtually normal and pain-free activity. Cement less hip replacements may last even longer.  As far as ceramic hips are concerned, they last for more than 10 years. Many patients have reported their hip replacements working well even after twenty years.
